Oak
Hill Cemetery
The sun was still up and the cemetery wrought iron gates were open. We
drove around the giant hill or small mountain which the cemetery sits on.
Surprisingly the cemetery sits behind a stone wall made back in the
1800's. When we passed by it I could not believe the old crypts, statues
etc off in the distance on the hill.
Christi and I parked almost at the cemeteries peak and we walked down to
this one area where a family was buried. She felt a lot of cold spots and
a presence near the highest wall where many graves were parallel along
side it.
We started to hike on down to this really eerie dead tree and after awhile
I became amazed cause there were so many large oak trees draping most of
the cemetery. I mean wait till you see the photos here you are going to be
amazed the cemetery almost looks like those European ones you seen on
television where its in tiers and on rolling hills.
We walked down to an area where some stones were broke and statues were
missing there heads. Near by was a real old gothic chapel. Strangely most
of the graves in the cemetery were masons and white men. There was hardly
any blacks buried here but now Birmingham is 99 percent black in
population so it made me wonder if perhaps this was the one cemetery or at
one time was segregated.
We came across a few old crypts some with wrought iron gates and
locks. One of them you could read the inscriptions inside which was a
whole family while another was built around a tombstone. Then another was
built into a grass hill you could climb on. We went back around taking the
road along a wall which dropped off facing the city. This area had some of
the oldest stones one I think I read was almost 200 years old. While in
this one area there were many stones scattered far apart where some trees
were uprooting various stones.
We also came across a wall in the cemetery which was falling apart cause
an oak tree was growing so large it pushed the stones outward. There was
one point in the cemetery we came across a giant crypt with long halls on
each end but it was locked up but sits near the entrance. It seemed many
prominent people and confederates were buried here.
We started out hike back up the small mountain got a nice overlook shot of
the city and we did read a vandalized area which again Christi felt a cold
spot or presence here. Not much else to say just that the cemetery is very
beautiful and although you will not see many ghost pictures from our
daytime trip here its a place full of ghost, history and beauty.
Later that evening after a long exciting day and having to deal with an
incident at our hotel I left past midnight to travel to Central Alabama to
investigate the Dixie Railroad.
