Our journey began taking a 45 mile road north of Tonopah through Monitor Valley and Shoshone Territory. The sun has not come up but you can see that its snowing out but you can also see that the Monitor and Toquima Ranges are full of snow. This is a long dismal ride we were not even sure if we would make it to Belmont but once we did arrive we started our expedition at the old cemetery which resides in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The cemetery is a historic landmark to the residents of Belmont as it has many notable figures such as Jack Longstreet one of the most notorious gunslingers of the west. The journey to the cemetery would be difficult as we would have to trudge through deep snow, barbed wire and it was below zero so very cold as well. Many of the children found here died in epidemics while others were miners who worked in the Silver Mines surrounding the town. On this journey we found some really massive tracks the strides were about 8' very strange to say the least!
The sun is starting to come up over Belmont so now were able to see some of the sites on the outskirts of town such as a windmill, Monitor-Belmont Mill Smelter Stack, Homesteads, Picturesque Scenery, Courthouse and eventually downtown Main Street. Its a quaint yet very quiet place especially when you arrive here at sunrise nobody is out despite the fact that there are folks who live here. Belmont is really within the top ten semi ghost towns in the Silver State. But their are no services here and just riding in your vehicle one can see that there are quite a few sites one can explore here. Their are quite a few ghost stories associated with Belmont in a sense its a bit eerie driving into town because everything is either boarded up, in ruins or simply closed for the winter here. Ill take everyone above the town a little so you can put it all into perspective of what and where we will explore. Off in the distance you can see the courthouse which is a fine piece of American West History.

In this clip will focus mainly on Main Street itself visiting sites like saloons, homesteads, ruins of the bank and Cosmopolitan. Your going to also see relics of the past such as old wagons and mining equipment. As you can see everything is scattered along Main Street ranging from wood to stone and brick structures. Belmont aka Transylvania was founded in 1865 when a Native American found a rich piece of Silver Ore. It sprung up as a tent camp eventually their were five mills processing ore and quite a few mining claims. This town had it all which included two saloons, red light district, Chinatown, race track, hospital, five restaurants, whiskey shops, main general store, four stores, livery stable, assay office, bank, school, three newspapers (Belmont Courier, Mountain Champion & Silver Bend Reporter), blacksmith shop, telegraph office, hotels, dance hall, post office, two cemeteries and a church. Today most of what was is simply gone but what is left is meant to be enjoyed and shared. It really was an amazing bustling town at one time and one can envision how it must had looked before it fell into disrepair. This is our grand tour of Belmont and we will return in the future to do more extensive research. But you will get to see many great sites such as the home where Tasker Oddie resided and the Doctors House. Many of the residents here ended up eventually becoming senators and Belmont was home to many notable figures in the American west including Jim Butler who founded Tonopah Nevada. People came to Belmont for its Springs the ground was fertile so corn, apples, apricots and crops were grown here.
Belmont held the Nye County seat up until 1905 but the problem was that it had nowhere to house county functions. Due to the jail being housed in the basement of the town bank and prisoners escaping a courthouse would be built in 1875 at the cost of almost 6 thousand dollars. Its Italianate Architecture along with its cupola can be seen from anywhere in the town and today it is one of the most photographed courthouses in the American west. It was made right on site with bricks fired in a kiln to be precise over 25 thousands of them. While the bottom floor  houses many county offices the second floor had a courtroom and judges chambers while the back area had a jail. That way the Sheriff and his Deputy had a place they could work out of since Belmont had plenty of lawlessness back in the day. Charlie Manson and his Family once squatted here back in 1969 but one of the locals with a shot gun supposedly chased him out today his name can be seen etched on a door frame within the courthouse. The courthouse is rumored to be very haunted but the only way to gain access today is to do repairs on it in exchange for access something were trying to look into. Ill take you on a brief tour around the courthouse and give you a tour of the jail cells which were removed at one time because they were sent to Gabbs then in the 1990's they made there way back to Belmont. When the courthouse had opened it had opened just in time for Independence Day and a ball was held here. While some men were jailed for their crimes here others were lynched not to far away from this courthouse.

It was time to leave Belmont aka Transylvania we were cold, tired and spent at least a half of day up here exploring the town. The sun was starting to shine bright and blue skies were arriving. I take our viewers to a few sets of stone ruins they look to be old homesteads and will drive around Belmont a little more. I was trying to find more mills you see in the morning I seen this mill up on a hill which I could no longer find its just weird. I still believe what I saw was a ghostly structure and later on this trek it simply vanished. With that being said I decided to give you guys some more milling history while driving out of town through Monitor Valley which is just covered in snow a total winter wonderland. Its a gorgeous drive descending into the valley but now we were ready to head out on a new adventure for our second half of the day which would be the old Tonopah Abandoned Airfield and Cemetery. I left the Humboldt - Toiyabe National Forest is awe as we headed back into the desert this truly was an amazing ghost town one that ill never forget and we hope our viewers will feel the same. I hope others realize that we must preserve what little is left and relish everything that comes with an adventure like this. I also drove past a guy that was stuck trying to go down a road to the Belmont - Monitor Mill be careful if you come out here there are no services and some of the roads can be very harsh in the winter. A local was helping him and funny thing is later in the evening after this trip he was dining at the Mizpah with me.
