The first time I have ever journeyed in the Modoc National Forest and Cascade Mountain Range was when we adventured within the Ash Creek Wilderness Refuge. Honestly what compelled me to hike in this area was the fact that more then often Pronghorn Antelope graze within its lush meadow. Sometimes I visit such locations in hopes of witnessing some form of nature other times I get more then that which can range from Bigfoot to UFOs and any other form of the paranormal you can possibly think of.

Ash Creek resides in the heart of Big Valley and trust me when I say this its so big that its mountains look very small from afar. As a matter in fact the preserve is 14,400 acres of freshwater wetlands created by the season flows of six streams including Ash Creek which seems to be one of the main tributaries that dominates the preserve. The meadow is that of a high desert that has a very healthy prairie dog population. This was one of my favorite parts to exploring this refuge within Big Valley are these little guys peeping their heads out of the ground to check you out.

In addition to Prairie Dogs their are also sand hill cranes, sage grouse, short eared owls, bald eagles, bobcat, pronghorn antelope, beaver, mountain lion, white pelican, yellow headed black birds, falcons and perhaps an occasional bear. The Modoc National Forest which surrounds Ash Creek offers a variety of terrain such as pine forests, lush meadows, lakes, streams, wetlands, high desert plateaus, lava beds and rugged canyons. As a matter in fact I would say over 70 percent of the land in this region is owned federally therefore allot of places similar to Ash Creek remains untouched, preserved and to a degree almost hidden away. Ash Creek does have native trout and possibly cat fish when I was hiking along its shore under a shady tree a massive of fish became startled causing a wave of large ripples. The natives probably fished out of this creek for thousands of years and today you can continue to enjoy catching them.

Although this was not a major trip to paranormal paradise its a place that should be shared with the world due to its beauty. Sure I chase the paranormal around every single corner but I also know then when its not available nature, history and scenery are never a let down here within the wild west. Big Valley is full of old ranches and early native American history which revolves around the Modoc Tribe. As a matter in fact a battle broke out north of here at the Lava Beds National Monument Park in 1872 between the tribe and Captain Jack's Stronghold of the US Army. Their were 53 braves holding off 3000 soldiers. Its quite possible that this meadow may have been an encampment at one time. We will be visiting the site this took place at in 2016 to conduct a more direct investigation and research project of the battlefield.

People today come here to fish, bird, camp, hunt and hike. Its very desolate your not going to find 20 people picnicking here let alone sometimes anyone. Although the high desert is prevalent here its very green and lush you would never even know it. Many of the mountains surrounding the meadow are covered in dense forest. Allot of the wildlife and possibly bigfoot could easily come on down to the valley to partake in a drink or bathing in the regions lush wetlands vernal pools. No less this was a special trip for our group considering it was our first time having a taste of the Cascade Mountains and Modoc Forest. Now we bring it to you!
