Apple Hill is situated in Camino California also known as Seven Mile House between the towns of Pollock Pines and Placerville.  The Seven Mile and Nine Mile Houses were inns. They were places for travelers to rest their horses in the 1800s. They also provided other services such as a small general store for supplies along the Pony Express. After the Seven Mile Hotel was built the town of Camino would grow along with its early ranches.

Even today the old pony express route traverses right through the heart of Apple Hill so it is as historic as it is picturesque.  Being situated in the Sierra foothills this place is surrounded by the Eldorado Forest which is well known for its Bigfoot/Sasquatch over the years. This is why we have taken such a huge interest in this region and although chances are your not going to see one touring the ranches during the day I am willing to bet that those who reside in this area have their own tales to tell!

I have always felt that Apple Valley is a food source for such creatures since this region has the highest concentrations of apple orchards in the state of California. Despite that in the Fall it is a significant tourist destination it still resides in a very rural locations.  There is a vast wilderness that surrounds the many ranches found here including the massive canyon of the American River which goes up into the high sierras.

Camino California is a very old town it has allot of haunted history. Apple Hill is just the trademarked name of the Apple Hill Growers Association which refers to its 55 ranches situated in this region. Click Here: Apple Hill if you want to learn more about it afterall its a great place to take the family.   In the year of 2013 Apple Hill commenced its 50th anniversary.

Apple Hill has a variety of sites all the way from Christmas Tree Farms, Pumpkin Patches, Vineyards, Wineries, Corn Mazes, Breweries, Spas, Cider Mills and all sorts of Apple Orchards. Although some of the ranchers have extremely high fencing around their apple trees I have found mangled fencing to suggest that something very strong has been able to bend it to get to the apples on the ground.

I have to admit the best Apple Cider and Pie I have eaten in the west I found here. I also bought a bottle of wine at the vineyard and been to the Jack Russell Brewery. There is not one part of Apple Hill I do not like all of it is as historically beautiful as the treats that you find in between.

It all began in 1951 when a Floyd Bolster retired in Camino so around that time he had purchased a 10 acre ranch that had apple trees. Some of the ranches and homesteads do date back to the 1800's but Apple Hill really was not put on the map till a century later.

When Floyd Bolster had died his son Gene took over the family ranch and came all the way from southern California to complete his dream.  He would run the Apple Farm and in 1964 would ally with other local ranchers and notable individuals. One of them being Dick Bethell the counties pomology specials and farm adviser, Ed Delfino the counties agricultural commissioner and a Bob Tuck a retired army officer united to form the Apple Hill Growers Association.  At that time their was only about 16 ranchers in the region today 55 so it has continued to build up over the last 50 years.

In 1964 the men held a press picnic where each rancher would host a meal for members of the press. The growers produced 50,000 paper litter bags that they passed out at the state fair. They offered two free pounds of apples to anybody brought a bag with them on their visit to Apple Hill. Many of the press members become good friends to the ranchers of Apple Hill.

Honestly apples were not the main crop back when the 16 ranches existed the major crop was pears. However the pear orchards went from producing 52 thousand tons in 1958 all the way around 8 thousand tons in 1965. Generally orchards such as Apple Trees tend to produce fruit for about a half of century. The pear orchards had outlived their usefulness so that is when Apples from the 1960's took on off.  Before the other ranches came to be many of the 16 original ranches grew pears.

Bolster claims that the apples at Apple Hill have better flavor then Washington State Apples. Bolster and Delfino worked hard at finding out ways to keep the soil rich. They wanted to improve there crop and even though Washington Apples are larger due to longer days the rich soil surround Camino produces a better tasting apple.  The apples do not have is long to grow this is due to the trees staying dormant longer as winter in the sierras is much longer.

Later on people like Clarice Larsen showed the locals what could be done with apples. She would put out desserts, pies, jams, jellies and sauces. Today you can still find some of her recipes if you search hard enough on the web. Because of women like Clarice desserts like Apple Pie and Ciders are now sold throughout Apple Hill. The Autumn is a very busy time of year as its harvest time not just for Apples but pumpkins as well.

On some of the original ranches one can see many artifacts, remnants of the past and antiques dating back all the way to the 1800's. The Larsen Ranch is said to have the oldest apple tree in El Dorado County which is called the Rhode Island Greening. While the Hilltop Ranch grows some very rare varieties of apples.

Between the ranches are hiking trails if you really want the full experience its allot more interesting to hike through orchards so that you can see some of the history. One lady who was at the cider mill a customer was critiquing our family for hiking in Apple Hill. But how can you not hike with picturesque scenery, historic sites and nature its a win win situation. I highly recommend anybody visiting here to do some hiking to get the full experience particularly in the Fall when the leaves are changing colors.

Apple Hill is a fine example of ranch marketing in Northern California as the government, ranchers and media all worked together to make it what it is today. During the Fall season cars are backed up to the highway and allot of these ranchers depend on their harvest to continue to keep their ranches in full operation.  There are other places you can visit to such as gift and candy shops. All of these places exist to make your visit memorable! There is something for everyone here whether its apples, pumpkins, pears, cherries, candy, native American crafts, chocolate, home cooked meals, cider etc etc.

By adding Apple Hill to our site allows us to promote the ranchers by bringing in tourism. But it also allows others to understand that perhaps the reason Bigfoot is so popular in the region is that these creatures can sustain themselves by gathering the apples that end up on the ground and end up as compost. It will also allow ranchers and other locals in the region to allow our group to investigate some of the sites that others may not get to see.

We have plans to see so much more of Apple Hill in the future my first time visiting it I went wine tasting. My second time visiting I experienced picking pumpkins, eating apple pie, tasting apple cider, hiking and even drinking at the brewery. This is a place that you can take the family and make it memorable by having a picnic under an apple tree. Also in Apple Hill is a historic cemetery very few people know about which in my opinion is part of the whole experience if your into early pioneer and rancher history! Many of the rancher names you see have family members buried here. So much history so much beauty and still their is enough room for even some Bigfoot lore. Especially in Sly Valley which is an area in the sierras a few miles away from Apple Hill that is full of history and beauty! You have to wonder to yourself why this is such a Bigfoot hotspot then when you start to realize all the fruits, wild berries and ranches here. It would only make sense that a primate like creature would often be sighted here because the Apple Hill area provides them with a plentiful supply of food and nutrition in theory!
